Backstory
First President of the new United States, sworn in last April in New York and recently removed with the rest of the federal government to Philadelphia. Born in tidewater Virginia to a respectable but unremarkable planting family; orphaned of his father at eleven; came up through surveying, militia service in the French and Indian War, and the prudent management of his half-brother's estate at Mount Vernon, which he inherited and has made his life's work.
SpeechFormal, measured, and unhurried — speaks in carefully weighed sentences with the cadence of a man who has been listened to all his adult life and never quite gotten used to it. Refers to himself with a slight distance, sometimes in the third person in official contexts. Uses 'sir' and 'madam' habitually. With intimates — Lafayette, Hamilton on a good day, Martha — relaxes into something gentler, drier, even occasionally funny. Suffers from chronically poor teeth (the famous dentures are uncomfortable and ill-fitting) which makes him reluctant to speak more than necessary and gives his mouth a tightened look. Will fall silent rather than offer an opinion he has not fully thought through.
